How to clean up Chrome tab groups automatically

Tab groups are great until you have twenty of them, half empty. Chrome lets you collapse, close or delete groups, but only one at a time and only by hand.

The built-in way

  1. Collapse groups you are not using by clicking their name.
  2. Right-click a group you are done with and choose Close group.
  3. Use the Tab groups entry in the bookmarks bar or tab search to reopen saved groups later.

None of this happens on its own.

The one-click way: Tab Group Janitor

Tab Group Janitor runs the cleanup for you. Turn on automatic cleanup, pick how long a group must sit empty, and choose all groups or only groups whose names match patterns you write. You can also run a sweep yourself from the popup, which shows how many groups are waiting.

Add to Chrome, it’s free (opens the Chrome Web Store in a new tab)
