How to set a default Gmail From address for each recipient
Gmail lets you pick one default sending address for the whole account. If you write to some clients from one alias and to others from another, there is no built-in per-recipient setting.
The built-in way
- Open Settings → See all settings → Accounts.
- In Send mail as, click make default next to the address you use most.
- For everyone else, switch the From line by hand when you compose.
That leaves you to remember which address belongs to which person.
The one-click way: Gmail Sender Guard
Gmail Sender Guard learns it from your sent mail. If you clearly use one address with someone, it reminds you when you pick a different one. If you have used several, it asks which to use and can remember it as that recipient’s default. Saved defaults can be viewed and removed in its settings.
Add to Chrome, it’s free (opens the Chrome Web Store in a new tab)
Frequently asked questions
Does Gmail have per-contact sending addresses?
No. Gmail has one account-wide default plus the reply-from setting.
What if I email a new person at a company I already work with?
If you clearly use one address for that company’s domain, Sender Guard suggests it for new people there too.
Will it nag me about every email?
No. With fewer than three past emails to someone, it stays quiet.
