Gmail sent from the wrong address? How to stop it

If you use Send mail as aliases or several work addresses in one Gmail, it is easy to reply to a client from your personal address or the wrong company. Gmail has one setting that helps, and it only covers replies.

The built-in way

  1. Open Settings → See all settings → Accounts (or Accounts and Import).
  2. Under When replying to a message, choose Reply from the same address the message was sent to.
  3. Before sending, click the From line in the compose window to check which address is selected.

Gmail cannot help with new emails, and it does not notice when you were only Cc’d or when you usually write to someone from another address.

The one-click way: Gmail Sender Guard

Gmail Sender Guard checks when you press Send. On replies it compares your From with the address the email was sent to. On new emails it looks at which address you normally use with that person or company. If something looks off, it asks “Do you want to change the sender?” before the email leaves.

Add to Chrome, it’s free (opens the Chrome Web Store in a new tab)

Frequently asked questions

Can I unsend an email sent from the wrong address?

Only within Gmail’s Undo Send window (5 to 30 seconds, set under Settings → General). After that, send a short correction from the right address.

Does Sender Guard read my emails?

No. It reads only sender and recipient headers of sent mail with Google’s read-only metadata permission, and keeps everything in your browser.

Does it work with Google Workspace aliases?

Yes. Any address you can pick in Gmail’s From menu is supported.
