How to create a Gmail filter by sender and subject
Filtering on sender alone catches too much when one company sends both invoices and newsletters. Matching the sender and a piece of the subject narrows it to the emails you mean.
The built-in way
- Click the search options arrow in the Gmail search bar.
- Enter the address in From and the words that repeat in Subject.
- Click Create filter, pick an action such as Mark as read or Apply the label, and confirm.
Gmail matches subject words, so use the stable part (for example “Weekly digest”), not the date or order number.
The one-click way: Gmail Filter by Sender & Subject + Mark as Read
Gmail Filter by Sender & Subject + Mark as Read builds that filter from the emails you select. It pre-fills the sender and subject, lets you edit the subject down to the part that repeats, and creates the filter in one click.
Add to Chrome, it’s free (opens the Chrome Web Store in a new tab)
